Class Policies:

Attendance:

  • Students are expected to attend class every day.  When absent, students are responsible for making up missed assignments. Tardiness is unacceptable; faculty will refer issues of tardiness to the director. Students who consistently miss class may struggle to engage with the material and perform well on assignments. Students with excused absences (e.g., illness, family emergencies, school-related activities with prior notification and documentation) will be given the opportunity to make up missed work.

Late Work

  • Late work may be accepted and students are responsible for obtaining missed homework assignments when absent. Assignments will be tailored to student needs. Some assignments may be graded for completion, while others will be assessed for understanding. Students are expected to manage their time effectively to complete assignments. Extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis for unforeseen circumstances, provided the student communicates with the teacher in advance.

Re-submissions

  • The goal is for students to acquire knowledge and a develop an improved mastery of the material. Students may resubmit assignments (e.g., projects, tests, ) once for a higher grade, provided the original assignment was submitted on time or within the designated grace period, and the student demonstrates a genuine effort to incorporate feedback and improve understanding. Students should request resubmission within a reasonable number of days of receiving the graded assignment, meet with the teacher to discuss the feedback, and demonstrate a clear plan for improvement. Students are encouraged to resubmit assignments where they haven't yet demonstrated mastery. To resubmit, students must meet specific criteria, such as completing additional practice problems, attending a review session, or meeting with the instructor to discuss areas for improvement. The resubmission deadline for each assignment will be specified.

Homework:

  • Students are expected to turn in homework on or before the due date. Homework might be assigned to reinforce concepts learned in class and to prepare students for upcoming lessons. However, for the most part, students are expected to complete all assignments in class to the best of their ability and on time. While completion will be checked, the focus of classwork is on learning and practice rather than solely on points. Students are encouraged to seek help when needed and communicate any challenges in completing assignments. When assigned work in class is not completed in class, it becomes homework. Classwork and Homework will be graded for both completion and accuracy.

Course Requirements:

  • Clear instructions and rubrics: The teacher will provide explicit instructions for each assignment, detailing the objectives, required components, and submission format. Rubrics, outlining the grading criteria, should also be shared to ensure students understand how their work will be evaluated.
  • Submission guidelines: The teacher will establish clear procedures for submitting assignments, including deadlines and the preferred method (e.g., online platform is Canvas).

Academic Integrity

We feel that it is crucial to impress upon young learners the enormity of the responsibility that attends Intellectual Property Rights. We want to create a school culture that is founded in the excitement of discovery and growth. This can only be accomplished if students are held accountable for their work. Each student in this course is expected to abide by the St. George Academy Code of Academic Integrity as defined in the student handbook.

AI in the Classroom

It is important that students submit their own work so the school can provide meaningful feedback to support each learner's growth. Academic integrity includes taking ownership of what you know, being honest about what you are still learning, and clearly identifying when ideas or words come from other sources—including AI tools.

As AI becomes more accessible, it's essential that students use these tools responsibly. This means being transparent about when and how AI was used in an assignment and following the guidelines provided by each teacher. Teachers will share which AI tools are appropriate for use in their specific classes and assignments. Misuse of AI, such as submitting AI-generated work as entirely your own, undermines the learning process and violates the academic integrity policy and will be referred to SGA Administration.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

In compliance with the St. George Academy policy and equal access (IDEA) laws, a Special Education coordinator/director and/or teachers will be available to discuss appropriate academic placement and accommodations in a student's IEP. If your student has utilized accommodations or an IEP in the past, and you have not verified that SGA has your student's current IEP on file, please contact our Director of Special Education, Mrs. Lorell Loosle at lloosle@stgacademy.org or in person at the school. If your student is not currently on an IEP, but you have concerns about their abilities, please contact your student's teacher, who will get you in contact with our Special Education team.

Aspire: All grades at SGA are posted using ASPIRE. Parents and students are given access to this system via email at the beginning of the school year. All instructors will post student progress in a timely fashion using this system.

Canvas: Many SGA instructors utilize Canvas for the school’s Learning Management System as one component to prepare students for their postsecondary experience. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with Canvas during the first week of school. This online platform allows teachers to extend learning opportunities that maximize student growth. Parents have access to this system through their student’s account.
